The Right Red and Sparkle for the Holiday Season
December is almost here, and the fashion scene fills with reds, metallics and sparkle. Maybe you are considering wearing red to a Christmas party or something sparkly for New Year’s Eve. But, with so many shades to navigate, what is actually the right red and metallic for you?
The Right Red:
There is a right red shade for everyone! Knowing your colour season is extremely helpful to get shade right. Winters wear a true red, autumns a deep warm red, summers a pinkish red and springs a bright orange red. People often tell me they find red a bit scary to wear. Typically, this is because they have worn the wrong shade, which can make the colour overpowering. The right shade of red will look like a natural extension of you, draw attention to your face and make your skin glow.
The Right Metallic:
Wearing the right metallic can make a beautiful fashion statement while the wrong one risks looking costume-y (think 70s lamé gone wrong). The same goes for statement jewellery, which can draw all the attention away from your face and outfit instead of complementing it. Cool skin tones (winters and summers) look best in silver while warm skin tones (autumn and spring) are best in gold. When it comes to sequins, the same applies. Black sequins will look great on winters too!
Easy Ways to Wear Red:
Still finding red a bit bold to wear? Here’s a couple of easy ways to ease into the colour.
Accessories:
A subtle pop of colour to your outfit. For women, a red belt can be a fresh addition to jeans, trousers and dresses. Why not add a pair of red pumps or handbag to a simple outfit. A little red lipstick can also go a long way. For men, colourful socks can add personality to a suit or daily outfit. You can wear red either as a single colour or part of a print. A red or red-printed pocket square is another great way to add a pop of colour. Keep the shirt collar open and never wear matching tie and pocket square.
Layering:
If you feel the colour is a bit much for your taste, try to layer with another garment. Add a blazer or cardigan to soften the impact of a red top. Jumpers can be thrown over a red shirt to only expose the collar and hem. Zip neck jumpers are also great for layering with colourful t-shirts. Always think about the colour combinations. Black can in many cases accentuate other colours. If you are wearing an orange red, try to pair it with camel or navy.
